Yuppie Becomes GOSSIP

Yuppie Becomes GOSSIP

In the 1980s, young professionals were (supposedly) all about making lots of money and being as materialistic as possible, leading to the term yuppie (young urban professional) as a derogatory for people focused on luxury sedans, expensive condos and interior design treatments. 20 years later, the yuppie seems to be back, but in a new form: a poll conducted by UK recruiter Office Angels found that 67 percent of 1500 respondents believed that gadgets like Blackberry handhelds, memory sticks and cell phones were all signs of an upwardly mobile professional, especially if that person also frequently dined on sushi for lunch and started their day with an expensive latte. 45 percent of the same group believed that to have a chance at success, a young professional should carry around two cell phones – one for work and the other for personal use. Seeing a trend, Office Angels dubbed this new group GOSSIPS (Gadget Obsessed Status Symbol Infatuated Professionals).

This might be a publicity ploy for Office Angels (there are currently 28 hits for the term in Google News), but I suppose it doesn't bother me if this new class of professionals exists – all the more people to read this blog. Hurrah for the gadget-obsessed, I say.
