this article in Nikkei Electronics Asia, three technologies that would allow the jump (so to speak) to happen are just around the corner. The most powerful one is
Electromagnetic resonance, which allows the transfer of several kilowatts over ten or eleven feet, allowing for the creation of power-generating strips in ceilings or floors that would power a whole host of devices without wires. Electromagnetic resonance could also be used in roads to power cars or factories to supply electricity to robots.
