Wii Radio Contest Goes Wrong

According to NBC11.com, a woman who died in the San Francisco area last week after competing in an on-air contest on KDND-FM's morning show died as a result of water intoxication, a condition where organs (including the brain) swell as a result of drinking too much water and that the radio show DJs are directly responsible. In the contest ("Hold your Wee for a Wii"), contestants could win a Nintendo Wii by being the person to go longest without urinating or vomiting after drinking a new bottle of water every few minutes. The women, Jennifer Strange, came in second in the contest, then went home and died a few hours later. Along with facing a civil suit, the DJs have been fired by the station and are under investigation for homicide by the sheriff's department, which isn't a fun way to start your weekend.
What's most woefully screwed up about all of this mess is that the DJs admitted on the air that what they were doing was dangerous and could kill someone. There have been several deaths related to drinking too much water over the past few years, although I'm willing to bet most people don't realize it's possible to kill yourself by drinking water – or that drinking too much water at once can give you a feeling similar to drinking too much alcohol.
