I would love to be able to replace all the incandescent bulbs in my house with lights made from light-emitting diodes (LEDs). They last a decade or more and they don't require a lot of power to run. Problem is: they're expensive. And not high-powered enough for many applications.
If reports are to be believed, we may be on the verge of a breakthrough. They may have figured out the secret to white LEDs. Once we've got that technology, and it produces the kind of lumens we need, LED light bulbs will be much cheaper, and even commonplace.
Imagine the power savings!
