The reality for hard drives is that if you are not going to be a SSD (Solid State Drive), then you have to fast, big, and do a few tricks to stay relevant. Western Digital knows that better than anyone right now, and that is why they have released the Western Digital AV-GP. Available in 1TB and 2TB configurations, these drives are rugged, fast, and energy efficient.
The features of the WD AV-GP hard drives are certainly impressive. The combination of Western Digital's proprietary IntelliSeek, IntelliPark, and IntelliPower technologies will reduce the power consumption of these drives up to 40%. They also run very quiet, and they can endure in high temp, always on environments. This makes them the perfect companion to an HD DVR setup or in a security system. Personally, I think this puppy would be perfect for a media server; it would last a long time and save you some money on power.
The Western Digital AV-GP 2TB configuration (WD20EVDS) runs $299, and it is available now. You can also purchase a 1TB version or a version with a small 8MB cache. But, if you are going to go big; go real big.
