I was cleaning my desk out earlier this summer, and when I picked up my keyboard, I heard rattling. I thought it was a rock or a screw, but I was not that lucky. It was a piece of peanut butter and jelly sandwich with two ants on it. I guess my son used my computer for homework. Needless to say, I needed to clean it off, and that was a 2 hour project that involved removing and washing each key, and then wiping down the key tray. A new washable keyboard available from Firebox.com would solved my problem and helped me with my little DIY keyboard project.
The Washable Keyboard is a standard QWERTY USB keyboard that is both Windows and Mac compatible. It does have a unique feature in that it is completely submersible; you can even put it in the dishwasher to clean it off. The keyboard is resistant to a whole list of bad things including bleach, acid, alkaline, and salt water. It is even coated with a specialantimicrobial coating which makes it easy to clean and disinfect. Like I said, it you can completely dunk the keyboard in water, and it won't be damaged. The keys are also laser etched so they won't fade with washing or use.
The keyboard costs approximately $60 which seems pricey for a standard USB keyboard. But then again, it might be the only keyboard you have to buy for a very long time because it will stay clean, and you won'taccidentally spill wine or coffee on it (both of which I have done with keyboards).
