Those of us who own a house, or an apartment for that matter, know how frustrating it can be to have to think about protecting our property, ourselves and our family. There's just so much stuff out there that is designed to "help" us do just that, but what really works?

Well, the frontline of course, is deterring factors. Signs, stickers on the windows and all that, but what is out there that will actually help you catch the crooks in the act?

alarm systems. I won't get too much into that, because if you're thinking of getting an alarm system, you really should talk to one of the bigger security companies, like Securitas Security Systems. But maybe you just want to keep an extra eye on your computer, or your stereo when you're not there.

This can help you. Hidden spy-cams, disguised as everything from a smoke detector to a pen - or you can even build your own. A few extra bucks will even get you a motion detector to wire your camera to - so you don't use up all that tape in one go.

There are many other things that I find tempting, at least - sound is good, and large sound comes in small packages these days. A speaker or buzzer the size of your thumbnail can howl at an intruder like you wouldn't believe.

But... what about my RV, or mobile home, or camping gear, you say?
Well, if you have a few extra thousand lying around with nothing to do, you can always get one of these - a portable surveillance kit, complete with recording possibilities, cameras and a screen for easy viewing. Nice one. I think I'll put that on my list for next Christmas.
