Project mixers like the Alesis iMultiMix8 USB are already their own special beast: they're great for musicians with small studios, looking to lay down demos or DJs who something portable and cost-effective to carry around to gigs. What makes the iMultiMix8 USB interesting though is that it's an attempt to use the best parts of external hard disk recording (portability, ease of use, avoidance of setup problems) without including the worst parts (fixed hard drive sizes, obsolescence), by taking out the internal hard drive and including an iPod dock for direct-to-iPod recording. Now the size and speed of the drive is limited by the power of the iPod you own, which is pretty cool.
