The Ubiquitous USB Modem?
Eric Zeman of the InformationWeek Blog is contemplating USB modems and the future of PC cards. His feeling: PC Card modems are useful because they're hidden inside the machine, but USB is better because it's everywhere - you can use the same modem in both your laptop and your desktop.

It's a nice theory (although I'm sure Eric's a little biased because he doesn't have a PC card slot), but as he points out, USB modems have one problem: they stick out. Not such a problem on a desktop, but on a laptop, a projectionlinks is like instant doom. Even if USB modems are more convenient, I don't think they're going to replace PC Cards.
