The magicJack Gives Free Phone Calls

VoIP and Skype are the latest things, but sometimes those services can be hard to deal with. You might want to consider the magicjack, a device that can simply the process of calling via the internet.
The magicJack has a USB male in one side and a female phone jack on the rear. All you need to do is plug it into the USB port and your phone goes in the other end. Apparently, all calls made on the magicJack are free, and it provides caller ID, call forwarding, call waiting, and even your own phone number.
It seems like every time I write about a really neat product, I always end with "no word of price or availability". This is one of those times.

It is very similar device I saw it, I use google to search, someone call flasphone and come from mplat.com , and almost two years before.
I guess, MagicJack don’t have core technology.

I will live in Columbus, Ohio area. Will persons calling me have to pay a long distance charge since my phone number may not be a local number to the caller? Thanks,

I have only had my magicjack for a short time and had quite a difficult time installing. I use my computer only for basic functions and had to download activeX files and java files and actually went through registration twice but now that it is installed I love it. I don’t travel internationally so it meets or should I say it exceeds my expectations. The audio is better than my regular land line which I have kept as part of a package deal. Not having a local number is of no concern since they still come in on my regular line. I picked a number local to my sister who lives 500 miles away and now she and her family can call me just like I was next door for free. I have called family in Texas, California,Oregon, and Missouri , all for free plus one business contact in Canada that used to take minutes off my phione card about 5 to 1. With no income except S.S. it has been a welcome addition to my computer. Most questions can be answered at unofficial magicjack forum. Some of you people aren’t going to be happy until you force this company to set up extensive customer service and start charging us all monthly fees to cover the cost. Leave them alone.

I HAVE HAD THE MAJIC JACK OVER A WEEK NOW, AND SO FAR IT’S GREAT. I’M GLAD TO HAVE MY OWN PHONE LINE AGAIN, SO WHAT IF IT’S HOOKED UP TO A COMPUTER. ATLEAST I CAN USE A CORDLESS PHONE WITH THE MAGIC JACK, AND BE ON THE PHONE AND THE COMPUTER AT THE SAME TIME. THAT IS ALL I’M WORRIED ABOUT RIGHT NOW. I JUST HOPE THEY DON’T START CHARGING US EXTRAS AFTER 1 YEAR.
By don ferguson, March 23, 2008 @ 9:24 am
if we have a non local phone number and area code to use the magicjack that means our local friends and neighbors will have to pay long distance charges to call us,right! IF THAT IS SO WHAT GOOD IS IT. we need this thing to work out of spooner,wi!!!! WE ARE REALLY UPSET THESE THINGS WERE NOT EXPLAINED TO US UPON ORDERING IT. they can not even tell us when we may be able to even do these things,if ever!! WE MIGHT AS WELL KEEP OUR REGULAR PHONE LINE!!

I would like to know if other people that call me, will they be charged a fee?
By Susan LaLonde, April 5, 2008 @ 9:46 pm
I have had my MagicJack since yesterday afternoon. It is the best thing since sliced bread! It was the easiest thing to install and within 5 minutes I was making phone calls. The live help is the best and they walked me through setting up my voice mail (which was the only thing I had slight problems with) The clarity of the calls is outstanding. We don’t have local area code for my area (which is remote area in Kentucky) but since we have caller ID and also a box that pops up on your desktop when you get calls if someone local calls me, I tell them to let it ring a couple of times and when thier number and name pops up on the caller ID I just call them right back. I will NEVER again pay the high price for long distance or phone service. I researched this MagicJack for over a month before I decided to purchase, and I got it within 2 days of doing so. If you read all of the FAQ’s you will find out anything and everything you need to know about it. I recommend it to anyone that has to make any kind of long distance calls regularly, and even just for the local calls it is worth not paying a monthly bill. My total price was right under $50 and that included shipping and handling and a $2.95 priority shipping fee that enabled me to get my MagicJack within 2 days. I want to thank the inventor of this gadget…has to be a genius. Anyone that would like to ask me any additional questions about this is welcome to email me at kutedymples@highland.net. If I can answer any questions you may have I will surely try. Like I said…I highly recommend this to anyone that wants a phone and has high speed internet. I have DSL and it works perfectly, my internet speed is not affected at all even when making or recieving a phone call.

Will people calling my magic jack number incur long distance charges, whether from my area code or not?
By Susan LaLonde, April 16, 2008 @ 10:42 pm
Yes, if people call you FROM a different area code, THEY will incur charges. But not you. I am have a different area code now from my daughter around the corner. She has a cell phone she calls me on now and it is still free for her. But if she were to call me from her house phone she WOULD incur charges. Any time you have to dial an area code in front of the number you are dialing whoever does the dialing incurs charges to that phone. I hope this helps.
By Greg, April 20, 2008 @ 2:46 pm
I have had MagicJack for about ten days now and in my opinion it is the best thing since sliced bread. I use it with a USRobotics usb phone I got at dear old Wal-mart for ten bux. Folks, you can take your laptop anywhere there is wireless access and call anyone for free! In two seconds I can change and use my “real” telephone with MagicJack, or I can use a headset. Tell all your friends who are complaining about having to call you long distance to get one of those 99-cent long distance cards and quit complaining. Please don’t screw around with this peeps – who wants to pay a monthly fee? I dropped my Vonage and i will probably never use my $9.68 Skype balance. MagicJack is beyond total coolness.
By Barb, April 24, 2008 @ 2:04 pm
I have the magic jack and a totally different area code from any who lives in my area…..when they call me they will be charged long distance??? But if they have a cell phone they will not be billed for long distance?
By Kim Rozell, April 28, 2008 @ 5:52 pm
I love Magicjack! This thing is awesome. If you are not loud enough, just go to the MENU and adjust the mic gain. Wow, best feature ever. Now the older folks I talk to can hear me better than on the conventional phone line! Since I mostly use this for long distance to friends and relatives, the non-local number does not matter. Just upgraded computers and don’t know what to do with the old one? Put your Magicjack on it, and dedicate it to a high quality cordless phone.
By AdwarePhobic, May 3, 2008 @ 12:01 pm
Amazing how many users are willing to accept adware programs, especially when they have to PAY for those programs. Read their terms of service policy, section 11, Advertisements. Their magicPage software that must run on your host is adware. Oh joy, you get to pay for spam.

After over 14 years in customer svc in the telecommunications industry. I am so glad that this came out. I knew it would only be a matter of time. I own my own business now and I can get a number that is local for people that are in my area that I am working. That way they are not calling long distance or an 800 number that I am paying through the nose for. It makes them feel like I am right next door even though I am about 2 hours away. If a family member calls they do the old 3 rings hang up, just like the old days when they wanted to let you know they got home safe and did not want to pay Ma Bell more money. Thank You
By TL RAE, May 13, 2008 @ 3:06 am
I MUST AGREE WITH SUSAN L.(9th comment down from top) WHO CARES IF SOMEONE LOCAL CALLS OR FROM ANYWHERE !! THE POINT IS U DONT HAVE TO ANSWER THE CALL (right away) ….U CAN CALL THEM BACK FOR FREEEEEE!!. LOL Thats the thing. Yes it is a bit of a pain in the a– and odd from the usual way of just pickin up the phone when it rings ….but that way wasnt as cheap ,now was it ppl.?? hehe….why do we go for change then resist it when it actually means we gotta change the way we are accustomed to doing it?? Well hope this confirms it for some..dont worry it took a bit of “resisting” & thinking for me to agree to this too… hehe Its all good now.:-) I’m happily adjusting to the way i make and receive calls now thru my pc and MAGIC JACK. THUMBS UP…keep in mind i’ve only just begun too. (and ready to save at least $30.00 / month. that’s a savings of at least $440.00/yr w/out long distance charges even!!) the math alone did it for me
ttfn!! :-O

I f this service is only $20.00 a year if this is what you choose. how can you keep from paying that high service.

I love my MagicJack. To avoid long distance charges my friends use their free long distance cell phones. I plan to discontinue my landline, as MagicJack works so well. I got the platinum plan so only have to pay about 20.00 a year for 5 full years!

I live in Ontario,Canada and I bought magicjack and I absoutely love it, I discon my regular landline which was almost $40 per month…..the only problem is that I have to use a N.Y phone number as they dont have canadian exchanges as yet…..but its nice when I call my friends they think I am out of the country. I tell them I am in New York even though I am just around the corner most of my long distance is in the United States anyway

Hello:
HELP!
I purchased my MagicJack about a month ago. Was so excited about it! I have a humming/static problem.
Got a lot of “I understand” from tech. Finally, they said I need to purchase an AC Powered USB hub. I just purchased a brand new computer.
My problem, my 30 days runs out today. Know I can’t send it back. Love the whole concept of MagicJack.
But, am so upset when everyone..says they can’t hear me because of all the LOUD HUMMING.
I have spent this whole last month playing with the mic’s..booting and rebooting.
Could someone help me?
Carol

My MajicJack gives very poor sound quality on in&out going calls when I am downloading and burn on my computer. Why? – When I burn CD’s, I also get an echo and the party I call only hears parts of my voice. Why??? (The only time the device works great is when I am not using my computer for anything, is this a glitch with the software or what?? I am running on an HP desktop with a Pen4 CPU 3Ghz/504 MB Ram).
By deonath, August 11, 2008 @ 1:20 pm
my name is Deonath I bought magic jack about four months and it work for a couple of weeks and after I started having problem to day is August 11 08 and I cannot get help and my phone is not working, so if some one can tell me what to do I will apprecate it thank you.
By Bonnie, August 13, 2008 @ 7:39 pm
I have used the MagicJack and it works fine for a while- then all of a sudden the person I am calling can’t hear me. I was told to disable my firewall and virus protection because it will interfere with audio quality. Ouch? Who wants to do that.
By Alan, August 13, 2008 @ 11:45 pm
I am a little cautious of it since when I install it, it has an ad window. How are they going to target the ads? Based on who I call? The quality isn’t all that great because every time I am doing something on my laptop, the quality starts to flicker. It is cheap, but folks that are buying 3 or 4 years of service in advance are really crazy. Personally, I would prefer to use my phone line on a regular line like Vonaje, Pack8 or TeleBlend. TeleBlend seems like a newcomer so I might give them a whirl.
By Cherry, August 25, 2008 @ 11:04 pm
I don’t have a landline phone, only a cell phone. Can I still use a magic jack??? … I am not a tech person… I have a cable internet connection; is that considered a broadband access???
By patrick, September 23, 2008 @ 8:12 am
I’m researching this before I buy it. I see that this has the call waiting and caller ID, I also see that My calls will be free but anyone without my Area code will have long Dis charges on them. Is this service only the $19 a year going to be for an extended time or is this just the first year? Also do I need to have my computer on all the time to be able to make phone calls or can I shut off the computer and still make and get calls?

I bought a MagicJack several months ago-it caused my computer to crash, cost my phone service and lost contact, refused to stay on the computer and took me a long time to get resolved. I finally received a grudging consent to send me a replacement at no cost if I returned the old jack. I got the email 11/10/08 that the replacement was being shipped, got a return lable for the old jack and an email stating I had two weeks to return the old jack before being charged. I noticed 39.95 has been taken from my account and when I tried to contact someone to help me with this, I was told I had better return the jack if I wanted my money back, there was no one to complain to and they could take whatever they wanted. This is not a company I will deal with again. Not only do they sell defective proucts, they go way out to be sure they don’t lose any of the money they have gotten.

M.DICUS MAJIC JACK HAS VERY POOR QUALITY IN TRANSMISSION. VOICE IS ALWAYS BREAKING UP.
CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NON EXISTENT. SHAME ON YOU IF YOU LOSE YOUR PROGRAM AS THEY CAN’T LET YOU DOWNLOAD A NEW ONE. ALL TECH SUPPORT IS VIA CHAT ROOM STYLE NO PHONE NUMBERS. THE TECHS ARE INCOMPETENT
AND KEEP PASSING YOU AROUND FROM ONE TO ANOTHER AND THEY ALL ASK THE SAME QUESTIONS OVER AND OVER. VERY FRUSTRATING
By YCPV, December 28, 2008 @ 5:58 pm
I bought my magic jack a few months ago, during the 30 days trial it was perfect!..Now it sucks, people have trouble hearing me, i’m always breaking up. When i want to make a call, sometimes i’m not able to, because the program doesnt allow me to. Its a great possible VOIP, but it need some work done!

By Dae, February 27, 2009 @ 6:09 am
You dufuses worried about whether people calling you will have to pay long distance charges miss the point. This device saves YOU money, get it?? The optimal setup is – have a cell number, do away with your land line (that saves $300 to $900 per year) and get the Magic Jack for forty bucks. Use the Magic Jack for 911 calls, for lengthy calls such as computer support calls, and simply call back friends and family who called you long distance. So they spent a dime to reach you, big deal. I’ve noticed that the call quality is GREAT on outbound calls, but not very good on inbound calls. But that’s fine, since I bought it to make outbound calls to save my cell minutes. Now do you get it?
By Carolyn, March 6, 2009 @ 7:50 pm
I am interested in getting the Magic Jack. I am a bit confused about the area code for local/long distance from reading the above comments. Why would you want a different local area code from your daughter (Susan’s comment above)who lives in the same town, just around the corner, where she would pay a long distance fee from her land line.? Did you not get to pick your area code? From reading the FAQ’s I thought I could have my local area code stay the same, if I wanted, and use my long distance like I would normally, except it would only be $20 yr. for me.
By QuantumIguana, April 3, 2009 @ 8:03 am
I bought it last night, and it wortked great. It didn\’t work when I plugged it into the USB port in the back of the computer, but it worked great when I plugged it into the USB port on the front.
The quality was crystal clear, and you can\’t beat the price. I have a prepaid cell phone to use if the internet is down. This product is phenomenal.
By Orin, April 15, 2009 @ 9:23 am
Magic Jack is relatively new and they do not have local numbers for every Area Code at this time. If you live in a major metro area, you probably will receive a local number. The numbers (prefixes) available are listed for each state.
Because Magic Jack uses a USB port and your computer, there can be problems. Not enough memory, CPU intensive programs like P2P file-sharing, and older, slower computers and hard drives that are almost full are just a few of the things that may cause problems.
Ideally, a computer dedicated to your magic jack phone connection works best. I have three other computers networked on my DSL internet and they do not appear to affect magic jack.
Problems will occur (just like with computers). Usually, a simple reboot of the computer, a disconnect and reconnect of the magic jack from the usb port or of the modem and/or router will fix the problem.
Obviously, you cannot believe most of the naysayers. They either work for a competitor (such as Vonage) or they don’t have enough sense to use a phone.
I don’t have a local number (and don’t know that I ever will) and I have had problems (mostly when downloading stuff). However, the $400-500 savings per year is more than enough to offset those petty problems (enough to buy another computer) and it works for me.
I’ve had magic jack since July 2008 and recommend it to everyone who wants to protest against overcharging telecommunication companies. If you don’t like it, you’re probably one of those people who don’t like anything that doesn’t cost more than it should. Forget about paying $12 PER YEAR (the 5 year renewal price for registered users) for phone service with features that cost $80 PER MONTH with MA BELL. Just leave us poor losers alone…we like cheap.
By Denise, May 23, 2009 @ 2:58 pm
This works GREAT for me… NO problems with set-up, registration, etc. and in 3 minutes I was making calls. LOW international rates too!
By Kot, May 26, 2009 @ 8:43 pm
I bought Magic Jack for international calls, at least so it said in the back of the package. Then I discovered that you must pay for calls from the US. And not cheap at all. I was very disappointed by the misleading information and never want to see this product again. MISLEADING is dishonest and makes me extremely angry.

MagicJack has a major conflict. It freezes your computer if you try to burn to a CD. MagicJack has known about this problem since it was released but rather then fix it they keep telling people to remove any programs that can burn a CD or DVD. They claim they are working on a fix for this problem but won’t tell anyone when they can expect to even see a Beta released for testing. If you press them for answers you get the same brush-off they give if you press for the promised Canadian numbers “It is coming soon. When it is avalible we will post it on the main page” After 2 years of MagicJack never following through on either promise, I ask you, how can you trust a company that keeps selling a product with such a major known flaw and never doing anything to correct it? They don’t even tell the public about the flaw or about the fact the MagicJack requires you to delete any program that can burn. Instead they tell you how simple it is to use and ignore any problems. How many would actully buy something that crashes their computer all the time and expects you to delete any software it doesn’t like?
By maree, August 1, 2009 @ 5:48 pm
In Australia prospective customers are being told they can purchase magicJack for $120 – no annual fees and optional upgrades if wanted for a fee – demonstration on their computer when I called showed poor quality and delayed and echo sound made conversation static – so far three promises of service to set up have not been honored – I will not be going through with purchase or business option – being christian and haveing a strong buisness ethic is important to me….I need to have people follow through with what they say…..I won’t be colored by the hype or the word FREE phone calls

It installed fast and easy. I have not tried the customer support yet and hope to avoid it!

I think MagicJack is awesome. I live in Washington State, have an Oregon phone number, and call Eastern Europe on a regular basis. I think it is great to live and work in one state, attend school in another state, and have phone numbers for both states. My Washington friends and associates call my cell phone and my Oregon instructors and fellow students call my MagicJack number. All I tell anybody else is call me, let it ring once and hang up. Let me call you back; that way you don’t have to pay to talk to me.
BTW, I read somebody refer to Christianity and business ethics–lol, since when does a belief in Christianity (or any other religion) translate into having ethics. Some of the most ethical people I know are either atheist or agnostic. Anyway, MagicJack is the best; I don’t know why people seem to be having trouble with it.
By Marie, October 24, 2009 @ 9:48 am
My husband and I purchased MagicJack about a year and a half ago. The first month we had it, we didn’t have any issues, but after then, it’s just been one problem after another. We’ve gotten dropped calls, calls that won’t come through (people get told that the number can’t be reached), echo’s, static, can’t make phone calls etc. We’ve contacted the technical support (if you can actually call them that) numerous times. I’ve followed their instructions to supposedly fix our issues to the letter, but nothing has solved the issues we’ve had. We’ve ran the MagicFix, upgraded each time there is an upgrade but still the problems persist. Between all the problems this phone service has given us and the lack of good support, I’d highly recommend NOT wasting your money on a product that isn’t worth your money. Stay away from MagicJack, it’s just a ripoff.

Ordered the MJ in Ontario. Using it on a public WiFi internet access. Those that say their MJ sound quality is clear, can you please let me know what internet type (ie WiFi, cable, DSL) and provider you are using?
Also, I’m using a V-Tech cordless phone but think the sound quality could be better due to the phone. What phones are people using with MJ that has good sound quality?
Facts:
*Canadian users have to get an American exchange (area code)
* those calling you that aren’t in same exchange get charged long distance rates UNLESS they have an unlimited long distance plan
*there is 24/7 customer support via live chat as long as you have an internet connection. I would save the thread of the conversation by cutting and pasting so you can refer to it if need be
*sound quality – a preferred and alternate DNS number should be added to your Internet Protocol v. 4 properties. MJ CS will provide
*sound quality – the background services should be enabled
*computer has to be left on at all times in order to make phones calls but incoming calls when shut down will go to voice mail that you get emailed to you (wonderful perk of the product), which you can check once on-line
*you can use a computer headset instead of a regular phone – just make sure to toggle
*if there is echo or static – adjust the mic/speaker output/input
*MJ does NOT provide 911 in Canada – keep a cell phone available for this or add to contacts the non-emergency numbers for police;fire and EMS
*sound quality is intermittent – sometimes great; sometimes crap – but I am accessing through public WiFi (would like input about what is best internet service for VoIP)
*if internet is down – you have no phone
*local calls seem to get the best sound quality
If you can get past these wrinkles and don’t make many calls I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t want one of these products – if only for the savings on monthly phone bills. I’m saving over $55 plus taxes each month. That $55 goes to purchase other products and not outrageous cable companies that hold monopolies on service in this country.

Why can I not call 812-383 prefix in Indiana. My mother lives in this area and Magic Jack when I call it rings busy. My mother is almost 90 yrs old. And I use this number more then any other number. and Magic Jack said I had to pay 38.00 to get it fix. I do not have a C.C. Or Ck. account. Please get it fix for me I need to see about her everyday. Thank you

I want to use this for making calls from USA to Mexico. This is the only reason I still have a home phone. If this would work I might be semi-rich..please any info you can give the sooner I can order.

I am interested in purchasing a magic jack but after reading the comments I have only one question. How is the area code determined? I thought everyone has to use the area code they live in.

Does your computer have to be on all the time in order to use the magicjack when making and receiving teleophoe calls?
By Virginia, August 11, 2010 @ 1:17 pm
Thieves, bills your card without notice and without authorization
It very easy to reach a customer services representative when you are purchasing the product, but when it comes to questions about unauthorized charges to your credit card, Magic Jack is short on representatives. They keep you on hold for about 15 minutes or so, and then they tell you that you are either 4 or so in queue until you are number 1, then they disconnect you, then you have to start all over again! You never really get anyone on the phone if you are not patient. They customer service department is the worst on the planet.
Be very careful of this company! It is not what they advertizes.
As the Us News and World Report correctly states “The magic Jack website looks like a carnival, and inventor Dan Borislow can sound like a carnival barker.” I would go one further, they are clowns, and we the consumers, are the gullible audience dazzled by the lights that miss the sleight of hands going on behind the scene.

It’s not all sweetness and light. I found I had a horrible time trying to get the device to properly install on my 24 inch iMAC with Snow Leopard OS 10.6.2.x The company’s tech support was less than impressive, and there is a known issue with Canadian callers like me being unable to call any Canadian National toll free number (Because magic jack seems to route all calls through the US, and is seen as a *foreign call, even if you pay the extra $10.00 charge to have a local Canadian telephone number and Canadian area code !

MagicJack promises of UNLIMITED calling is a lie. If you read the TERMS OF SERVICE carefully, you will find that there is a 50 call per day limit to different numbers. If you exceed this useage they will terminate your outgoing service with no chance of getting it restored. I have chatted online with several different reps and they all say the same thing. I am presently trying to contact YMAX by phone but so far all I have gotten is an auto voice mail number that says they will call back. I am very disappointed with MagicJack and their deceptive ads and reviews.

I did love my magicjack aat first but the last month or so I cannot make out going calls to any of my three daughters and if they call me then my voice keeps fading in and out and we can’t talk.I have had a terrible time trying to reach magicjack and have told them my problems and they say they will fix them but I have had no results and I don’t have a very good feeling right now towards Magicjack. I wish they would reach me and fix this problem. I miss having my phone work correctly.

I bought a magicjack two years ago to talk to my fiancee in Canada. I sent it to her. The service was just fantastic. We were able to talk whenever we wanted. We were happy and started ta tell all our friend and family about the product. They started buying it. My fiancee gave the first one to a friend and I sent her another one. Next thing I know, a couple months later they shut hers down saying that she abused the product’s terms and conditions of use. They wouldn’t do anything to restore the service. We are very disappointed and ask that you read and understand those “terms and conditions” really well before you fire your phone company, like we did. Now we had to go back and rehire our phone company.

Why do I have to pay $38.00 just to talk to tech support?
I’m just trying to get started with the insulation, what customer service? MAJIC JACK Customer service takes you no where,do they even have a phone number info for tech support?
By Shelvajean, October 14, 2010 @ 11:48 am
Trying to renew your account is worse then impossible. When I did a live chat because my order kept getting canceled by Magicjack I was told now for over a week that my account is being reviewed???? For What they haave no idea. I’m willing to pay, have valid Debit card, so what is there to review???? Also there has been plenty of times that who ever I’m talking to develops a sudden stutter as well as I do. IF they can hear me at all. I guess the story is true…If it sounds too good to be true it probably isnt!!!

The majic Jack works fine if you have high speed internet and not high speed lite. I allows you to call locally and long distance from it. The problem with the Majic Jack is if someone tries to call your Majic Jack number locally. I hook mine up and tried calling it with my cell and it says the number is long distance. According to their tech support which by the way is only through dhat and it sucks. They claim that in order to call a Majic Jack number from a cellphone or Lan line locally the area code and prefix must match. They also claim that the provider of the phone may not allow it without long distance charges. So here is what I told them and never got an explaination to what I had said. I told them that my wife can call from her cellphone without getting a long distance message. We both have the same cellphone provider and both are different prefix’s than the Majic Jack. I try calling it with my cellphone and I get a message saying the number you have called is long distance. I also told them that I can call my friends Majic Jack and there are no long distance charges. My area code is the same as his Majic Jack number but the prefix is different. My neighbor called from her Lan line and it charges her long distance to call my Majic Jack number. We have the same area code and different prefix. So why is it I can call my friends Majic Jack number from my cellphone with same area code but different prefix but not my own? Why can my wife call my Majic Jack number with her cellphone who has the same provider as I do and the same area code as the my Majic Jack number but a different prefix and my cellphone won’t? So the Majic Jack is good for calling locally and long distance but not always able to call a Majic Jack number locally. If anyone can explain what I have written please do so. Remember all the Majic Jack tech support could tell me repeatedly is that the area code and prefix must match to call a Majic Jack number locally. I have proven that not to be the case.

Phone calls via Magicjack from other countries to family and friends in the U.S. are easy and free. Great! I have used it for over a year. Is there a way to call from the U.S. to other countries free also (not voicemails)?

This is the worst thing that i have purchased. i plugged it in and when i go to call i can not hear the other person on the line and to make it even worse the computer has to be on to use it.

hi seems great but the down fall yor neighbors call and they get long distant charches just for local calling
By Desi, December 24, 2010 @ 1:45 pm
I have 2 MagicJacks… and they suck!!
Unfortunatelly my 30 day trial has already expired…. The calls sound very “robotic” and the call quality is horrible… nobody to chat on magicjack website to try to return my product. When I subscribed I paid for the 2 year agreement so I could have the discounted prive of 19.99 (2 years) lets see if they will charge me or not…
I WOULD NEVER RECOMEND THIS TO ANYBODY!!
Better spend a little extra with Skype phone or any other VOIP phone than waste your money with Magic jack
Very unhappy customer!!

I got the Magic Jack at Target for $39.95, which included 1 year service and the device. My cell phone had poor service in my home but Magic Jack was great !! No drop calls, no distortion & best of all, all my local & national long distance calls are included in the annual fee, with no minute charges. Renewals after 12 mths appear to be only $19.95 per YEAR, not per MONTH. This is unbelievable!!!! I love it.

I have Magic Jack and Vonage. I don’t like having to pay 30 bucks a month for Vonage but as most Vongage clients will tell you, it blows MagicJack away. I really want the MagicJack to work. My main problem with it is voice quality, especially inbound (earpiece volume). I’ve tried every trick including device volume, etc., but the fact is: It is just not loud enough and you can see for yourself that it is only set at 70% of a possible 100% headset volume capability and there is nothing you can do to change it. If you have kids, a nagging spouse, or a television on simultaneously on in the background, forget it. The Magic Jack simply cannot do the job. But I do hope they find a way to improve it. For now, I am using Vonage and have plugged in my wireless phone to it which has multiple handsets. The quality matches any land line and I never tell anyone that I am using a computer phone. The wife wouldn’t even know the difference.

Yes u have to have ur pc on to make and recieve calls but if u dont they will go into voicemail. I have had the MJ for about 4 months now and it is the best thing I have ever bought. High speed internet works best. I do get a glitch every once ina while when talking but thats only when I have a million things going on pc. I paid I think 40.00 for everything for the 1st yr after that I think it will be 20.00, for 20.00 a yr y complain about a few minor glitches. I love it!! Also u can for an additional charge get international calls added.
By Lindsay, February 18, 2011 @ 9:58 am
I have had this product for a yr. now & I think it’s wonderful. I think alot of people that are complaining about the quality of the sound don’t have a high enough computer speed. So please don’t blame the Magic Jack. I have not had any of the problems that most of these people are talking about. Every once in a while, it might take me a try or two to get a dial tone on my phone, but that’s it. I also think people forget this product is pretty inexpensive to buy, & that it’s only $19.95 a yr. to renew. How can you complain about that?? I will, however, agree that customer service is not so great–their 24 hr. “live” help is via email only. Some of their operators don’t seem to have had much training. Again, for the price we are paying, it is really hard for me to be negative about this product. I highly recommend it. It comes with a 30 day guarantee, so for anyone having problems, simply return it.

My husband just bought MagicJack for me last week and I installed it this Monday and I love it. I’m not having any problems with it at all, I’m telling all of my friends and relatives about it and I hope they get it, I just love it!

MI bought Magic Jack over three years ago and it had been a wonderful phone service for me. The few problems I have had were a lot less then problems I have had with my cell phone. Over the last three years problems like echo and dropped or incomplete calls have reduced showing that they have been improving their service and product.
I believe that they should give full refunds to people who have trouble using their product because most people, who try it, love it or at least love not paying a monthly phone bill anymore. The few that can’t make it work – give their money back. I think in the long run they would end up with more customers if they didn’t see so much negative feedback from people who feel like they have been ripped off.
