The magicJack has a USB male in one side and a female phone jack on the rear. All you need to do is plug it into the USB port and your phone goes in the other end. Apparently, all calls made on the magicJack are free, and it provides caller ID, call forwarding, call waiting, and even your own phone number.
It seems like every time I write about a really neat product, I always end with "no word of price or availability". This is one of those times.

I have only had my magicjack for a short time and had quite a difficult time installing. I use my computer only for basic functions and had to download activeX files and java files and actually went through registration twice but now that it is installed I love it. I don't travel internationally so it meets or should I say it exceeds my expectations. The audio is better than my regular land line which I have kept as part of a package deal. Not having a local number is of no concern since they still come in on my regular line. I picked a number local to my sister who lives 500 miles away and now she and her family can call me just like I was next door for free. I have called family in Texas, California,Oregon, and Missouri , all for free plus one business contact in Canada that used to take minutes off my phione card about 5 to 1. With no income except S.S. it has been a welcome addition to my computer. Most questions can be answered at unofficial magicjack forum. Some of you people aren't going to be happy until you force this company to set up extensive customer service and start charging us all monthly fees to cover the cost. Leave them alone.

I HAVE HAD THE MAJIC JACK OVER A WEEK NOW, AND SO FAR IT'S GREAT. I'M GLAD TO HAVE MY OWN PHONE LINE AGAIN, SO WHAT IF IT'S HOOKED UP TO A COMPUTER. ATLEAST I CAN USE A CORDLESS PHONE WITH THE MAGIC JACK, AND BE ON THE PHONE AND THE COMPUTER AT THE SAME TIME. THAT IS ALL I'M WORRIED ABOUT RIGHT NOW. I JUST HOPE THEY DON'T START CHARGING US EXTRAS AFTER 1 YEAR.

if we have a non local phone number and area code to use the magicjack that means our local friends and neighbors will have to pay long distance charges to call us,right! IF THAT IS SO WHAT GOOD IS IT. we need this thing to work out of spooner,wi!!!! WE ARE REALLY UPSET THESE THINGS WERE NOT EXPLAINED TO US UPON ORDERING IT. they can not even tell us when we may be able to even do these things,if ever!! WE MIGHT AS WELL KEEP OUR REGULAR PHONE LINE!!

I have had my MagicJack since yesterday afternoon. It is the best thing since sliced bread! It was the easiest thing to install and within 5 minutes I was making phone calls. The live help is the best and they walked me through setting up my voice mail (which was the only thing I had slight problems with) The clarity of the calls is outstanding. We don't have local area code for my area (which is remote area in Kentucky) but since we have caller ID and also a box that pops up on your desktop when you get calls if someone local calls me, I tell them to let it ring a couple of times and when thier number and name pops up on the caller ID I just call them right back. I will NEVER again pay the high price for long distance or phone service. I researched this MagicJack for over a month before I decided to purchase, and I got it within 2 days of doing so. If you read all of the FAQ's you will find out anything and everything you need to know about it. I recommend it to anyone that has to make any kind of long distance calls regularly, and even just for the local calls it is worth not paying a monthly bill. My total price was right under $50 and that included shipping and handling and a $2.95 priority shipping fee that enabled me to get my MagicJack within 2 days. I want to thank the inventor of this gadget...has to be a genius. Anyone that would like to ask me any additional questions about this is welcome to email me at kutedymples@highland.net. If I can answer any questions you may have I will surely try. Like I said...I highly recommend this to anyone that wants a phone and has high speed internet. I have DSL and it works perfectly, my internet speed is not affected at all even when making or recieving a phone call.

Will people calling my magic jack number incur long distance charges, whether from my area code or not?
Response from:
Susan LaLonde
(04/17/08 1:42am)
Yes, if people call you FROM a different area code, THEY will incur charges. But not you. I am have a different area code now from my daughter around the corner. She has a cell phone she calls me on now and it is still free for her. But if she were to call me from her house phone she WOULD incur charges. Any time you have to dial an area code in front of the number you are dialing whoever does the dialing incurs charges to that phone. I hope this helps.

I have had MagicJack for about ten days now and in my opinion it is the best thing since sliced bread. I use it with a USRobotics usb phone I got at dear old Wal-mart for ten bux. Folks, you can take your laptop anywhere there is wireless access and call anyone for free! In two seconds I can change and use my "real" telephone with MagicJack, or I can use a headset. Tell all your friends who are complaining about having to call you long distance to get one of those 99-cent long distance cards and quit complaining. Please don't screw around with this peeps - who wants to pay a monthly fee? I dropped my Vonage and i will probably never use my $9.68 Skype balance. MagicJack is beyond total coolness.

I love Magicjack! This thing is awesome. If you are not loud enough, just go to the MENU and adjust the mic gain. Wow, best feature ever. Now the older folks I talk to can hear me better than on the conventional phone line! Since I mostly use this for long distance to friends and relatives, the non-local number does not matter. Just upgraded computers and don't know what to do with the old one? Put your Magicjack on it, and dedicate it to a high quality cordless phone.

Amazing how many users are willing to accept adware programs, especially when they have to PAY for those programs. Read their terms of service policy, section 11, Advertisements. Their magicPage software that must run on your host is adware. Oh joy, you get to pay for spam.

After over 14 years in customer svc in the telecommunications industry. I am so glad that this came out. I knew it would only be a matter of time. I own my own business now and I can get a number that is local for people that are in my area that I am working. That way they are not calling long distance or an 800 number that I am paying through the nose for. It makes them feel like I am right next door even though I am about 2 hours away. If a family member calls they do the old 3 rings hang up, just like the old days when they wanted to let you know they got home safe and did not want to pay Ma Bell more money. Thank You

I MUST AGREE WITH SUSAN L.(9th comment down from top) WHO CARES IF SOMEONE LOCAL CALLS OR FROM ANYWHERE !! THE POINT IS U DONT HAVE TO ANSWER THE CALL (right away) ....U CAN CALL THEM BACK FOR FREEEEEE!!. LOL Thats the thing. Yes it is a bit of a pain in the a-- and odd from the usual way of just pickin up the phone when it rings ....but that way wasnt as cheap ,now was it ppl.?? hehe....why do we go for change then resist it when it actually means we gotta change the way we are accustomed to doing it?? Well hope this confirms it for some..dont worry it took a bit of "resisting" & thinking for me to agree to this too... hehe Its all good now.:-) I'm happily adjusting to the way i make and receive calls now thru my pc and MAGIC JACK. THUMBS UP...keep in mind i've only just begun too. (and ready to save at least $30.00 / month. that's a savings of at least $440.00/yr w/out long distance charges even!!) the math alone did it for me :-) ttfn!! :-O

Hello:
HELP!
I purchased my MagicJack about a month ago. Was so excited about it! I have a humming/static problem.
Got a lot of "I understand" from tech. Finally, they said I need to purchase an AC Powered USB hub. I just purchased a brand new computer.
My problem, my 30 days runs out today. Know I can't send it back. Love the whole concept of MagicJack.
But, am so upset when everyone..says they can't hear me because of all the LOUD HUMMING.
I have spent this whole last month playing with the mic's..booting and rebooting.
Could someone help me?

My MajicJack gives very poor sound quality on in&out going calls when I am downloading and burn on my computer. Why? - When I burn CD's, I also get an echo and the party I call only hears parts of my voice. Why??? (The only time the device works great is when I am not using my computer for anything, is this a glitch with the software or what?? I am running on an HP desktop with a Pen4 CPU 3Ghz/504 MB Ram).

I am a little cautious of it since when I install it, it has an ad window. How are they going to target the ads? Based on who I call? The quality isn't all that great because every time I am doing something on my laptop, the quality starts to flicker. It is cheap, but folks that are buying 3 or 4 years of service in advance are really crazy. Personally, I would prefer to use my phone line on a regular line like Vonaje, Pack8 or TeleBlend. TeleBlend seems like a newcomer so I might give them a whirl.

I'm researching this before I buy it. I see that this has the call waiting and caller ID, I also see that My calls will be free but anyone without my Area code will have long Dis charges on them. Is this service only the $19 a year going to be for an extended time or is this just the first year? Also do I need to have my computer on all the time to be able to make phone calls or can I shut off the computer and still make and get calls?

I bought a MagicJack several months ago-it caused my computer to crash, cost my phone service and lost contact, refused to stay on the computer and took me a long time to get resolved. I finally received a grudging consent to send me a replacement at no cost if I returned the old jack. I got the email 11/10/08 that the replacement was being shipped, got a return lable for the old jack and an email stating I had two weeks to return the old jack before being charged. I noticed 39.95 has been taken from my account and when I tried to contact someone to help me with this, I was told I had better return the jack if I wanted my money back, there was no one to complain to and they could take whatever they wanted. This is not a company I will deal with again. Not only do they sell defective proucts, they go way out to be sure they don't lose any of the money they have gotten.

You dufuses worried about whether people calling you will have to pay long distance charges miss the point. This device saves YOU money, get it?? The optimal setup is - have a cell number, do away with your land line (that saves $300 to $900 per year) and get the Magic Jack for forty bucks. Use the Magic Jack for 911 calls, for lengthy calls such as computer support calls, and simply call back friends and family who called you long distance. So they spent a dime to reach you, big deal. I've noticed that the call quality is GREAT on outbound calls, but not very good on inbound calls. But that's fine, since I bought it to make outbound calls to save my cell minutes. Now do you get it?

I am interested in getting the Magic Jack. I am a bit confused about the area code for local/long distance from reading the above comments. Why would you want a different local area code from your daughter (Susan's comment above)who lives in the same town, just around the corner, where she would pay a long distance fee from her land line.? Did you not get to pick your area code? From reading the FAQ's I thought I could have my local area code stay the same, if I wanted, and use my long distance like I would normally, except it would only be $20 yr. for me.

The quality was crystal clear, and you can\'t beat the price. I have a prepaid cell phone to use if the internet is down. This product is phenomenal.

Im from Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada. I noticed no one from here has written yet. When i first purchased my M/J. I was pleased with how easy it does set up. Just a matter of \"following the directions\". I have a Seattle phone number because we dont have Canadian numbers yet for the M/J. So for those of you who talk about others having to call long distance to reach you, the solution is too easy. My cell phone is a local Canadian number. I call forward my cell to my new M/J number. I costs me $5 a month from my cell company to do that. Now my friends are calling me at no charge to them and they have no idea im even at home. Also, for $20 bucks a year, I can live with a few glitches here and there. If i have the odd phone call that isnt %100 i can call them back or whatever but guys, quite sweating the small stuff. Most of the complaints on here appear to be out of ignorance. I gave up my land line and am saving $600 bucks a year MINIMUM. I think I\'ll spend the $580 towards my next vacation. As far as a M/J ruining a computer? I\'d be replacing the Tech guy that told you that. My computer is 4 yrs old regular PC no problems. Stay off the porn sites LOL. Have fun with the M/J. I surely recommend it.

Magic Jack is relatively new and they do not have local numbers for every Area Code at this time. If you live in a major metro area, you probably will receive a local number. The numbers (prefixes) available are listed for each state.
Because Magic Jack uses a USB port and your computer, there can be problems. Not enough memory, CPU intensive programs like P2P file-sharing, and older, slower computers and hard drives that are almost full are just a few of the things that may cause problems.
Ideally, a computer dedicated to your magic jack phone connection works best. I have three other computers networked on my DSL internet and they do not appear to affect magic jack.
Problems will occur (just like with computers). Usually, a simple reboot of the computer, a disconnect and reconnect of the magic jack from the usb port or of the modem and/or router will fix the problem.
Obviously, you cannot believe most of the naysayers. They either work for a competitor (such as Vonage) or they don't have enough sense to use a phone.
I don't have a local number (and don't know that I ever will) and I have had problems (mostly when downloading stuff). However, the $400-500 savings per year is more than enough to offset those petty problems (enough to buy another computer) and it works for me.
I've had magic jack since July 2008 and recommend it to everyone who wants to protest against overcharging telecommunication companies. If you don't like it, you're probably one of those people who don't like anything that doesn't cost more than it should. Forget about paying $12 PER YEAR (the 5 year renewal price for registered users) for phone service with features that cost $80 PER MONTH with MA BELL. Just leave us poor losers alone...we like cheap.

MagicJack has a major conflict. It freezes your computer if you try to burn to a CD. MagicJack has known about this problem since it was released but rather then fix it they keep telling people to remove any programs that can burn a CD or DVD. They claim they are working on a fix for this problem but won't tell anyone when they can expect to even see a Beta released for testing. If you press them for answers you get the same brush-off they give if you press for the promised Canadian numbers "It is coming soon. When it is avalible we will post it on the main page" After 2 years of MagicJack never following through on either promise, I ask you, how can you trust a company that keeps selling a product with such a major known flaw and never doing anything to correct it? They don't even tell the public about the flaw or about the fact the MagicJack requires you to delete any program that can burn. Instead they tell you how simple it is to use and ignore any problems. How many would actully buy something that crashes their computer all the time and expects you to delete any software it doesn't like?

I think MagicJack is awesome. I live in Washington State, have an Oregon phone number, and call Eastern Europe on a regular basis. I think it is great to live and work in one state, attend school in another state, and have phone numbers for both states. My Washington friends and associates call my cell phone and my Oregon instructors and fellow students call my MagicJack number. All I tell anybody else is call me, let it ring once and hang up. Let me call you back; that way you don't have to pay to talk to me.
BTW, I read somebody refer to Christianity and business ethics--lol, since when does a belief in Christianity (or any other religion) translate into having ethics. Some of the most ethical people I know are either atheist or agnostic. Anyway, MagicJack is the best; I don't know why people seem to be having trouble with it.

Some of the most ethical people I know are either atheist or agnostic. Anyway, MagicJack is the best; I don't know why people seem to be having trouble with it.

My husband and I purchased MagicJack about a year and a half ago. The first month we had it, we didn't have any issues, but after then, it's just been one problem after another. We've gotten dropped calls, calls that won't come through (people get told that the number can't be reached), echo's, static, can't make phone calls etc. We've contacted the technical support (if you can actually call them that) numerous times. I've followed their instructions to supposedly fix our issues to the letter, but nothing has solved the issues we've had. We've ran the MagicFix, upgraded each time there is an upgrade but still the problems persist. Between all the problems this phone service has given us and the lack of good support, I'd highly recommend NOT wasting your money on a product that isn't worth your money. Stay away from MagicJack, it's just a ripoff.

Ordered the MJ in Ontario. Using it on a public WiFi internet access. Those that say their MJ sound quality is clear, can you please let me know what internet type (ie WiFi, cable, DSL) and provider you are using?
Also, I'm using a V-Tech cordless phone but think the sound quality could be better due to the phone. What phones are people using with MJ that has good sound quality?
Facts:
*Canadian users have to get an American exchange (area code)
* those calling you that aren't in same exchange get charged long distance rates UNLESS they have an unlimited long distance plan
*there is 24/7 customer support via live chat as long as you have an internet connection. I would save the thread of the conversation by cutting and pasting so you can refer to it if need be
*sound quality - a preferred and alternate DNS number should be added to your Internet Protocol v. 4 properties. MJ CS will provide
*sound quality - the background services should be enabled
*computer has to be left on at all times in order to make phones calls but incoming calls when shut down will go to voice mail that you get emailed to you (wonderful perk of the product), which you can check once on-line
*you can use a computer headset instead of a regular phone - just make sure to toggle
*if there is echo or static - adjust the mic/speaker output/input
*MJ does NOT provide 911 in Canada - keep a cell phone available for this or add to contacts the non-emergency numbers for police;fire and EMS
*sound quality is intermittent - sometimes great; sometimes crap - but I am accessing through public WiFi (would like input about what is best internet service for VoIP)
*if internet is down - you have no phone
*local calls seem to get the best sound quality
If you can get past these wrinkles and don't make many calls I can't see why anyone wouldn't want one of these products - if only for the savings on monthly phone bills. I'm saving over $55 plus taxes each month. That $55 goes to purchase other products and not outrageous cable companies that hold monopolies on service in this country.

Magic Jack is a GREAT SERVICE.. But if you don't have a Good Running PC hand have done your part in maintaining it with Up to Date Virus protection, If Magic Jack does not work for you it is your fault. I have had mine for 2 years and I am a technician. Too Many times people have a slug of a machine and Blame everyone else for it. Please Read and take a class .. Learn about the wonderful and useful yet very Complex device we take for granted.. Our PC's.

I just purchase a magic jack and It refuse to install and on top of that it needs a land line ! I do not have a land line nor do I want one it is expensive to have a land line just to keep service without phone calls. I needed magic jack for my international calls. This is of no use to me if it needs a land line since I do not want one. My mobile is 43. 13 per month for unlimited talk and text any time anywhere in the United states. I just wanted this magic jack for calling overseas. Any positive suggestions?

i had MJ for a couple of months and they have this free call where u can make a 5 min call overseas and it will hang up which is no probs coz u can make gazillion 5 min calls all day, i used to call my family in the Philippines but recently whenever i make my 5 min call voice prompt will say the country is not supported i wonder why? but overall i love magic jack! for those people who hates it, you are just TOO DUMB to use it.
