The Band of Life: Preventing John Doeism, USB Style
Remember the AMBER Alert drive, the USB drive that stores scads of information about your kids in case of a kidnapping? I think I've found the next logical step: the Band of Life. The idea is pretty clever: you fill out your medical information in a piece of encrypted software, then plug in the Band of Life and download the file onto the band's built-in USB drive. The software then destroys the file to avoid potential privacy issues (although it's not entirely clear whether or not you make the updates online or through a downloaded piece of software). Put the band on your wrist and when you next have a medical emergency, all of your information is available in either English, Spanish, French or Italian to whoever is responsible for saving your life. Because the drive requires no additional software to operate (I'm guessing it stores the information in a text file), it's supposed to work on any computer in the world, guaranteeing that you won't end up as a nameless body in a county morgue. However, I do have to wonder what happens if you lose the band; is there are any sort of protection to keep someone from stealing the information contained within?
