TDK is Promising 2.5TB HDD Before the End of the Year

On my computers, I have a wide range of hard drive sizes. I have an 80GB SSD in a MacBook, a 120GB SSD in another, and on my home computer, I use a 250GB platter drive. I thought I was hot stuff when I purchased a 1TB USB drive to back up all of my data on. I remember saying to myself "I will never need more that 1TB", by the way; that drive is completely full. Luckily, TDK is working on new technology that should allow for 2.5TB 3.5 inch platter hard drives by the end of the year.

TDK's technology focuses on 640GB drive platters that can be stacked in order to accomplish the 2.5TB capacity. These drives would be the same size as any 3.5 inch desktop drive. The same technology will be used to create super-sized platters for 2.5 inch notebook hard drives which will allow for cheaper 640GB laptop hard drive capacities. The race is on between SSD technology and platter drive technology. It really doesn't matter which technology comes out ahead; we consumers win either way.

Look for the 2.5GB platter drives to be massed produced in November. They should hit the streets by the end of year. Yes, at first they will be pricey, but by the end of 2010, all the cool kids will have them.
