I ran across some posts online talking about the StarChase Tagging and Tracking System. This system is a way for police to tag a vehicle with a GPS transmitter, rather resort to a high speed chase. The videos on the StarChase website show the system mounted in the grill of a police vehicle and Fired via a compressed air launcher like a paint ball gun.
It appears that the system is designed so that police officers can aim the StarChase tagger at the suspect vehicle during a traffic stop and if it moves from its original position the tracker is fired automatically. The video also mentioned a hand held launcher version. Engadget is reporting that the LAPD is testing the StarChase system for possible deployment.
