Spy Camera Precursor Up For Auction

It may be a bit more awkward to conceal now than it was when it was first patented in 1886, but this camera, attached in a case that made it look like a lady's watch, still garners plenty of interest: it's expected to generate over $30,000 US at an auction in England next month. The case, known officially as the Lancaster Ladies Watch Camera, was manufactured by J. Lancaster & Son and is one of only existing copies, making it pretty darn rare. The fact that it sports the precursor to the spy cameras of the 20th century doesn't hurt either when it comes to attracting the attention of collectors. I wonder if this particular camera was ever used in any underworld activities?
