Some of the Best Goodies of the Decade

With only a day remaining in both the year and the decade, it's only right that everyone and their brother seems to be waxing poetic about all of the goodies, gizmos, and gadgets that have made this past decade special. While I won't use my blog space to simply reprint one of the dozens of lists currently being circulated, it is only fitting that I do mention some of the technologies deserving of recognition:
GPS- Using earth orbiting satellites as triangulation points of reference, this technology revolutionized our understanding of where we are, where we're going, while simultaneously perfecting our knowledge of the earth's geography.
WiFi- There are many means of transmitting data via airwaves but WiFi is invaluable for its ability to standardize devices across a wide range and to allow open access in countless locations with nothing more than a simple refreshing of the device in question.
DVR- When the DVD finally obliterated the VHS tape, it looked like recording one's favorite programs to be viewed at a later time went bye-bye as well. DVR not only granted such wishes but it spoiled the user with such luxuries as being able to pause live today, rewind, or fast forward through the commercials.
High Definition/ Flat Screens- The lack of a giant (and heavy) tube was only one part of the bonus of upgrading to an LCD, Plasma, or LED high definition display. Progressive scan output meant higher rez but it was also easier on the old peepers.
iPod- The MP3 file compression method can actually steal part of the credit on this one for literally changing the way consumers purchase and enjoy music but it was Apple's little gadget back in 2001 (and the corresponding iTunes store) that put music directly into the ears of users everywhere and finally squashed insecurities that the Internet would make it impossible for labels and artists to make money off their songs once and for all.
