Slingbox vs. At-Large Recorder aka Replay SlingCorder
Filed in archive Household Entertainment by Shane McGlaun on July 20, 2006

Many of you will be familiar with the Slingbox device that allows you to stream content from your TV to a computer. To be able to record streamed content for viewing later another company called Applian had a product called Replay SlingCorder they were selling. Sling Media, the creators of the Slingbox, felt that the name SlingCorder was to close to their trademarked name and asked Applian to change the name of the product. Applian agreed and renamed the device At-Large recorder
.
Closely following the name change of their device, Sling Media introduced a beta firmware for their Slingbox that encrypts the stream between the PC and the Slingbox, rendering the At-Large Recorder useless with the new firmware. Sling Media is apparently claiming that the encryption was coming anyway and just happened to be at virtually the same time they made a 3rd party product designed to complement their Slingbox was forced to change the name. Needless to say, Sling Media has many customers that are both angry that they are encrypting the stream and angry that At-Large Recorder will no longer work with the Slingbox. You can see the rumblings for yourself at the Slingbox forums.
