Scientists one Step Closer to Creating Cyborgs
Sure, they claim it's to help blind people, but you and I both know that in 15 years, mercenaries and spies are going to start replacing their eyes with these bionic eyes, just like William Gibson said they would. The gadget in question is a retinal implant that simulates a digital camera, capturing light and turning it into electrical impulses that go down the optic nerve and into the brain, where they are interpreted as sight. The implant, developed by researchers at the University of Glasgow to aid people with macular Degenerationlinks and retinitis pigmentosa, works well on the retinas of animals, but currently processes images at a 100 pixel resolution. The scientists believe that they will need to achieve a resolution of 500 pixels for normal sight, an accomplishment they think is 5 or 10 years away.
