Mobile Phones
by Chris Matier on February 17, 2009

If you are not tracking MWC (Mobile World Conference) this week, then you are missing out on some major new developments in mobile phones and mobile technology. One of those announcements has been the samsung Omnia. The Omnia will be the first phone capable of recording HD video (720p) via its onboard camera. That is a specification that isn't half bad considering that my two-year old video camera can't even do that.
The Samsung Omnia, in addition to its impressive video capturing capability, will also feature a 3.7 inch 360 x 640 resolution touchscreen, HSUPA connection, Bluetooth support, up to 16GB of internal storage, and a microHD support. With a full sized 32gb SD card, you should be able to record 35 DVD quality movies or 18,000 8 megapixel images. That is impressive.
With the increasing quality of onboard cameras and storage devices in cell phones, I wonder how long it will take until digital cameras are no longer a consumer staple. Convergence is a good thing; it helps to eliminate the number of devices I am lugging around with me. Samsung has not released a price point on the Omnia, but the device is expected in the second half of 2009.
