Mobile Phones
by Andrew Garrett on March 29, 2004
OK, first things first - I didn't pay for this. The nice people at Salling.com sent me a complimentary copy of their product "Clicker". In return, I promised to do... exactly nothing. The exact phrase was:
Anyway. If you have a bluetooth capable Mac of some sort and you have a bluetooth capable portable device (phone or PDA), then you might just find Salling's Clicker worthwhile.
Clicker is a remote control appplication - using your bluetooth enabled mobile phone or PDA, you can control applications on your mac. You installl the sofftware on your mac, and on your phone - on my T610 it appears under Connectivity->accessories->(name of your computer)
Upon going into the menu, you're presented with a list of applications/modes - iTunes, Keynote, Powerpoint, DVD Player, iPhoto and Mouse Mode. Although not quite as intuitive as a dedicated remote, within seconds I was skipping tracks in iTunes, rating tracks, browwsing playlists, altering volume - almost anything you can do with the mouse, you can do with your phone. In fact, with the last option, you can even use your phone as a mouse.
As astounded as I am by this little application, it's not really something I'll have much use for. I don't give presentations - my iMac is home use only. Also, my office is quite small - if I can't reach the keyboard and mouse, I'm probably not in the office.
However, I can see this being incredibly useful for presentations, or slide shows, or even mobile DJing. Me? I'lll just use it as another example of how much better macs are at bluetooth type stuff.
If you have a product that you'd like reviews, please feel free to get in touch - I'll let you know if I think it's suitable, and I'm happy to take time limited versions of software and trial them, as long as you're happy to accept an honest review. Sound fair?
"I won't expect anything over here."
