RIM’s answer to the security threat

After Saudi Arabia recently announced it was cutting access to email and the Internet for Blackberry users, it seems an agreement has been reached with Blackberry maker, RIM from Canada.
At issue for the Saudi Government is lack of access to the information being sent via Blackberry users as it is processed outside of the country. They believe that in their fight against terrorism they need access to the data to make sure it is not being used for criminal purposes.
RIM have said that they will build a server in Saudi Arabia that can be monitored by security forces. It is corporate communication that is the focus of the ban because general users do not have the encrypted security capacity that corporations have.
For many, this is less a move to increase vigilance of potential criminal activity and more a further incursion into the rights of citizens to have privacy in their communications. Whatever happens, India, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates also want greater control over users data.
