PSP, DS…GP2X?

Imagine a portable gaming device that's more powerful than the Nintendo DS, has better video playback than the Sony PSP and can play some 500 games, most free to download. Now imagine it costs about $180 – more than the DS, but a good $60 or $70 cheaper than the PSP. Curious? Then you probably want to learn more about the GP2X, a Linux-based device produced in England (which is why you've probably never heard of it). With two 200 MHz processors, 64 MB of RAM, 64 MB of built-in memory (plus available flash memory upgrades of up to 2 gigs), WiFi and a TV-out adapter, the GP2X certainly has the right hardware. Software-wise, the GP2X includes the SDK to allow anyone with the programming skills to develop (and upload) their own games and utilities. "Not since the days of the Amiga", says the GP2X website, "has a system been so easy to develop for, commercially and for fun." The best part? Although the device is a product of the UK, the manufacturers will ship around the world, including the USA, at reasonable rates. If you're thinking of getting into portable gaming and want to try something a bit out of the ordinary, the GP2X might be the way to go.
