Research firm Gartner says the number will double to 2 billion by 2014. That is a lot of new computers. Gartner also estimates that this year alone, 35 million computers will end up in landfills. The problem there is that many computer parts are toxic, and with millions of them filling holes in the ground, much of that toxicity could leach into the soil.
What Gartner didn't say is what we should do about all of this? Do you have any hints or suggestions on what to do? Have you recycled a computer or disposed of it properly? I would love to hear about your experiences. Sound off in the comments and let me know.

I have never thrown away or recycled any computers or gadgets. I find that no matter how old a computer is, someone could get a lot of use out of it and would love to have it. Windows 98 was not the best OS in the world, but a lot of Windows 98 machines can run 2000 or Linux, which are both very useful. I do not recommend physically recycling your machines, but giving them to someone/ somewhere that could use it, such as a school or family.

If you have the time and patience, you can set up a TiVo-like machine from an old computer with MythDora or MythBuntu (Linux) at no cost other than cables to hook it up to a TV.
