When it comes to smartphone typing, I am all thumbs, or maybe I am not thumb enough. Which ever the case, I can barely work my way around a competent email on my iPhone let alone type an entire document. I cannot imagine what sci-fi author Peter Brett went through. He knocked out over 100,000 words of his novel, The Warded Man, on a subway in New York using only his HP iPaq. It is an impressive feat indeed.

I can see this trend taking off. After all, netbooks are all the rage; my own authoring PC has shrunk a bit. I used to use a full 15" MacBook, then I moved to a 13", and now I am busy writing away on my 12.1 inch HP tablet. If my iPhone were two inches larger, it would be tempting to blog or edit documents on. A novel, on the other hand, is a bold move, but it does point toward a direction of smaller, more ubiquitous computing across the board.

Peter Brett is also big on the Kindle, and has some interesting predictions about the future of reading and writing technology. I am excited to hear about an artist that works in a traditional art form that is readily embracing the future. All too often authors, musicians, and other artists are afraid of buttons, gadgets, and gizmos and the future that is coming up very quickly.

Check out the full Peter Brett interview; better yet, read his interview and his book.
