Noise Cancellation: The Next Portable Music Frontier

It does seem that now that we've all got MP3 players, we've started to realize that maybe it would be nice if we could hear what was playing through them, especially on crowded seats or on loud public transportation. As a result, there's been a proliferation of noise-cancelling headphones that have hit the market, using everything from computers to inner-ear earbuds (like the J-Lab JBuds I reviewed over the summer) to achieve the desired effect: peace and quiet to hear whatever you're trying to listen to.
Sony being Sony, they've already gotten into the act with headphones, but now they're taking things one step further, introducing a new Walkman with noise-cancelling technology built in to the player. Hitting the streets in November, the new player features 50 hours of battery life, an information display that rivals the iPod Nano but only 1 – 2 GB of storage space for between $169 to $199.
