A Nintendo hard drive was rumored for a while. It was thought to be necessary to to the Wii's staggering lack of storage capacity. Sure, you could use SD cards, but you were limited to a few GB and even then you could not play WiiWare or Virtual Console games directly from the SD card. You could store them, but it was a pain to save, archive, and then reload just to play. That has been solved in Wii Menu 4.0. Not only can you use SDHC cards with a capacity of up to 32GB, but you can also play games and read files directly off of the SD card. When you browse your SD card, your media and games show up in channel format like any other Wii item.
A hard drive peripheral was a lousy idea; it would have cost more than it was worth. To be cost effective, it would have to have been huge, and for WiiWare and Virtual Console titles, a large hard drive just isn't needed. All that is needed is a few GB and the ability to play off of the SD card. That is exactly what Nintendo has delivered. SDHC cards go for just a few bucks; you can often find a 32GB card for under $40. Personally, I think it is a win for both Nintendo and the user.
