That is just what New York designers Fluxxlab hopes to do with their newest design. It works by simply spinning the door, and the door makes the power via magnetic coils.
It all sounds very simple, but I don't know how long it would take before it could be implemented. Probably when we are really desperate for energy, which is probably now.

Excellent idea. What about all those schemes to capture the kinetic energy of footsteps and generate electricity? Between these two things, we got all the electricity we need!
