Mystery Of The Sony Rolly Revealed
Filed in archive Portable Media Players by Michael Pick on September 10, 2007
After teasing us with early previews of its strange new device Rolly, Sony has finally revealed what the thing actually is and does. Speculation was fierce in the tech news world, with guesses ranging from the latest replacement for Sony's Aibo pet robot, to some kind of strange Playstation 3 peripheral.

Mystery Of The Sony Rolly Revealed

In actual fact, Rolly is a wireless audio device, as Akihabara News reported today:
"Essentially the ROLLY is a kind of wireless speaker/audio player with 1GB of internal memory, you can interact with it and select the tracks you want to listen to. The Rolly is an autonomous audio player and has a battery life of 5h when it plays music from its internal memory and 4h 30m if the music it streamed to the ROLLY via Bluetooth computer connection. Finally you can also PLAY with the Rolly since it will be able to somehow "dance" in rhythm with the music it plays for you."

So while it isn't quite a robot pet, Sony have attempted to inject some basic personality into the device. While I have to say it isn't on the top of my "must buy" list, the novelty will for some make it a worthy addition to their array of oddball gadgets.
