More Computer Power at Your Fingertips

Forget the Wii controller; researchers at the University of Buffalo announced today that they've developed a computer control device that fits on your finger is so tactile that it can be used for everything from a replacement for a Mouse to a high-end gaming controller to a medical diagnostic tool that can read information about organic surfaces directly into a computer. Called the Fingertip Digitizer, the gadget combines a force sensor, accelerometer and motion tracker into one thimble-sized tool that fits on the user's finger.

I have a feeling we've got a bit before we see this peripheral for sale at your local Best Buy and even then, it'll probably be too expensive for most to replace their mouse with. Still, the possibilities for something like this device even in every day applications like gaming are enormous – think of how many frags you could pull down if the computer knew exactly what your finger was doing, instead of trying to understand you through your mouse.
