LanRoamer TP500

LanRoamer TP500

My last house was wired with CAT5e in almost every room. One or two of the jacks had issues. In order to troubleshoot this and future problems, I bought a LanRover TP500 from Test-Um. Let's me know if the line is good and if not, which wires are bad/shorting.

In my new house, the only CAT5 cable I have is that which I run along the floor. To get some of the cable lengths I need, I have to use CAT5 couplers to connect two Ethernet cables together. I had some of these couplers lying around. Had no idea if they worked or not. Ran the coupled cable, tried it, no go.

I could have left it at that, but no, I had my LanRover. I checked the cables. The individual cables were fine, but when I introduced the coupler into the equation, it was showing miswires and reversed pairs. Fun.

In finding a picture for this blog post, I discovered that Test-Um got acquired by JDSU and the product is now renamed the LanRoamer TP500. Same product, different name, still useful. At least to people like me. :)
