Kodak Launches Printer Line With Lower-Cost Ink

My sister called me the other day – she wanted to know whether or not spending $35 on a color cartridge for her inkjet printer was the norm, or if she was just in a really expensive store. I did some quick fact-checking online and confirmed what I had already suspected: my sister was yet another victim of the "get you with the cheap printer and expensive ink strategy" printer manufacturers have pursued for years. Kansas City Star writer David Hayes claims your typical inkjet printer will cost you between $500 and $1200 every three years in ink costs (although that must be from fairly regular usage), some hefty pricing that definitely kills the value of an $80 printer very quickly.

For a while now, the smarter option has been to get a laser printer – you'll pay more up front, but overall the printer costs a lot less to use. However, the chemists at kodak have another option: a new ink that Kodak claims will save you 50% in cartridge costs but still look as good as the older, more expensive option. Whether the quality will be equal to the task is question for the future – the printers won't hit the streets until next month – but the price difference is definitely there: $150 for the 5100, the cheapest member of the line, but $10 for black cartridges and $15 for color cartridges is a welcome change.
