The concept, according to this article in STLToday.com is both very simple and very popular: people film themselves opening hot gadgets (PS3s, Wiis, XBOX 360s, iPods, Zunes, digital cameras, cell phones, etc.) and other people watch them, getting a vicarious rush in the process.

Personally, I don't get the thrill - either there are a lot of voyeurs out there, or people are able to get past the idea of watching someone else open the stuff they want very quickly. Then again, if you think about it, porn works the same way - you're watching someone else fulfill one of your fantasies. Unboxing: it's like gadget porn without the exploitation.
