Ah, Sony. When you get things right, you usually get things
really right. Of course, when Sony fails, it tends to fail miserably (
MiniDisc, for example, has become a niche-enthusiast technology for all of its initial promise), but the company is hoping to avoid that stigma with its new personal communicator, the
mylo. The mylo, which stands for My Life Online, is a 802.11b WiFi device with a flip-down keyboard, headphones and microphone that allows you to chat on IM via Google, Yahoo or Skype, make Skype phone calls, look at pictures, watch video, listen to music and surf the web using an HTML browser, all without any sort of subscription plan. It also includes support for Sony's Memory Stick Duo (the same one
the PSP uses) in addition to the 1 GB of internal flash memory, so you have some additional drive space to play with for larger files and has a battery capable of 3.5 hours of phone time, 7 hours of web browsing and 45 hours of music playback (oh, the power-saving beauty of flash drives).
Aimed at those who spend most of their time surrounded by WiFi waves (like college students and young professionals), the mylo comes in
white and
black and retails for about $350.
