Incandesent Bulbs Banned From Sale After 2012 In U.S.

Engadget reports that the recent energy bill passed by the U.S. Congress starts to phase out incandescent bulbs starting in 2012. By 2014, all light bulbs 40 watts and above will need to be at least 25%-30% more efficient. By 2020, light bulbs will need to be 70% more efficient than today's products.

I am not a huge fan of compact fluorescent bulbs, myself. They take a while to warm up and don't produce the same kind of light. I can't wait for LED bulbs to start showing up as they produce better light, use even less energy than compact fluorescent bulbs, and last longer.

LEDs are not good for the economy though. Or should I say tax revenues. Anytime you make something that lasts longer then the average smo will not be replacing it anytime soon. That trickles down to less jobs etc.

@TechZilla That is a good point. Things that don’t break as often don’t get replaced as often. On the other hand, it means that there will be MORE money available to spend on other things.

Personally, I think the “disposable” mentality that has overtaken the world is at least partially responsible for the environmental quagmire we find ourselves in today.

The ban is definitely a good idea. I’ve stared using GU10 LED bulbs from a company called Homewatt and they’ve been great for my energy consumption.
