High Definition DVD: Confusing Standard Gets Even More So

DVD to look forward to - if more confusion is really something you'd anticipate.First off, we have Time Warner's upcoming high-def standard, Total HD. Not another standard (thank God); Total HD is really a clever way of saying "stopgap solution" - it can be played in either HD DVD or Blu-Ray players and probably won't be as quite as good as either original. The second element is the rumor that LG will be announcing a combo player that plays both HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs, the first step making it possible to maybe start moving beyond the standards war and into the adoption territory - and after that, start driving down high-def DVD prices. There's one problem with the LG player, however: it's more expensive than either high-def option by itself.
In the meantime, no one is buying these discs (unless they're buying for something like the PS3) because they have no desire to get caught with their pants down. Personally, I wonder if this technology is coming through a little too soon. How many people own HD TVs at this point anyway? If they do, are they going to want to drop an additional $800+ on a DVD player and then start re-buying their DVD collection just to see it in HD?
