Gemotion: Not the wave of the future, but it is a wave.

artist and University of Tokyo Professor Yoichiro Kawaguchi has designed something that is very cool, but I don't quite see a use for it. His invention, the Gemotion, is a screen that is as flexible as cloth, mounted on 72 air cylinders. When the cylinders go up and down, the screen changes shape, creating a very funky effect. I guess I'm surprised someone didn't try and invent this before, but I'm not certain why. I'm guessing the image is projected onto the screen from the front (note the funky pattern on the man's hands that matches the screen). However, I'm not certain if changing the shape of the screen will give a 3-D effect that we are hoping for. No, we'll need holograms for that.
Still, I think the Gemotion is just plain cool. If you are in Tokyo anytime before the next month, stop by the National Art Center to see the Gemotion on display.
