For Some Reason, This Seems Like Super Spy Technology

It must be a huge conumdrum for IT heads at major corporations: they give out Blackberrys to employees so they can keep on top of email while out on business and thus keep the company ahead of the competition…but if that employee loses their Blackberry (say in a cab, which seems to happen a lot), it could end up in the hands of that competition, eliminating that advantage in a simple case of industrial espionage. What to do?

Well, Necessity being the mother of Invention, Research In Motion is coming up with a solution; or at least that's the rumor. According to an article in the Toronto Star, the Blackberry maker is the process of developing a wireless gadget that would keep in communication with the Blackberry; if the Blackberry goes out of range, it sends a message to the user. If an unlocking code isn't entered in the next 10 minutes, the Blackberry locks up all data on phone, rending it useless. Strange as it may seem, the first thing I thought of was how a device like this might make a great plot point in a spy thriller: "we have 10 minutes to unlock this thing, or we'll lose all of the secrets about that terrorist cell."

Maybe I should just stick to writing blog posts.
