Digital Transition Is Looming and Many Aren't Ready

I know that the readers of the Gadgets-Weblog are not the ones whom I am talking about, but many are not prepared for the digital television transition that is happening on Friday, 12 June. I am speaking to your crazy aunts, moms, dads, and second cousins who still get their television programing over-the-air instead of satellite or Hulu.com. Apparently there are about 2.8 million people unprepared.

In Feburary, the transition was supposed to happen, but no one was ready – not even the Federal Government. At the time, there were 5.8 million households unprepared so the number has shrunk, but 2.8 million seems like an awful lot of folks without a plan or a clue. What surprises me most is the demographic that is unprepared. According to the Nielsen Ratings people who are tracking this the transition, it actually isn't our older parents that are the problem:

Younger, African American and Hispanic homes are disproportionately unready, while the elderly are the most ready.

If you or someone you know is not prepared for the DTV transition this Friday, there is still time. You can go here for a transition fact sheet, or you can head here to see how your local market is doing. (Warning – Links are PDF Documents).
