Delta Brings the Wi-Fi Love by 2009

Delta Airlines announced today that they are going to be the first and only US airline to roll out in-flight Wi-Fi service on all of their domestic flights. They are set to go on this by 2009. This will mean that if you fly Delta, all 330 of their airframes will be Wi-Fi ready.

Now, I didn't say "free" Wi-Fi. Jacking in on a Delta flight will run you $9.95 for a 3 hour (or shorter) flight and $12.95 for a longer flight. The service, provided by Aircell's Gogo inflight Internet service will be initially rolled out on 133 flights this year, and will be omni-present by the end of 2009.

It will be interesting to see how service will be throttled or what IP services, such a VOIP or streaming torrents, might be blocked. Regardless of how things shape up, a three hour flight from Denver to California would be a bit nicer with a little web surfin'.

I don’t know why more airlines are not providing this, given that they are taking away every other perk, including the magazines, to save on fuel.
