Dell Confirms Mobile Device Group

PC maker Dell confirmed news that many insiders were hoping was coming. It is forming a mobile device group devoted to launching a bigger push into the smartphone market.
The new division will be headed by Ron Garriques, a former Motorola executive and current president of Dell’s consumer division.
This news comes two months after the company announced plans to build a smartphone for AT&T using Google’s Android software.
Dell’s revenue has dropped in recent years due to lost PC market share to rivals such as Acer and Hewlett-Packard which has prompted the firm to take such actions as to close several factories, open retail stores and buy tech services company Perot Systems for $3.9 billion.

I’m not certain Dell will succeed in this area. I’ve worked in academia for years and had a lot of Dell products. Their customer service has been great, but we’ve needed to use it a lot. I’m not certain I would want to have my phone serviced as much. We’ll see how this turns out, but I think the Droid and iPhone are safe for now.
