"A cellphone is the only way you can call to keep up with your food stamps, your housing application, your job," says Rommel McBride, who spent six years on the streets.
Granted, the bag lady isn't sporting an iPhone or HTC Diamond; most homeless cell phone users, according to the survey, are using prepaid subscription phones such as a GoPhone or H20 Phone. The cell phone allows them to have ready access to the services they require such as food stamps or homeless shelters. The homeless advocates that are responsible for the survey also report that a large number of homeless also have email accounts. I remember when I bought my first cell phone, I took so much crap because I was an early adopter and people thought I was trying to show off; things have changed. Needless to say, our modern world has developed a very odd dependence on technology.
