Buy This Not That – MacBook Edition

Oh, the new MacBook's – what tempting teases they are. Mark did a nice write up of the the new, sexy Aluminum goodness. Being a Apple person, I could not help but drool over the new form factor, nifty trackpad, and faster chipsets. But, as I delved further, I found myself a little conflicted. There are some glaring drawbacks to the new MacBooks. Specifically, the lack of FireWire and price. So, as much as it pains me to say it, buy a refurbished BlackBook (high-end last generation black MacBook), not the new aluminum MacBook.
Here is why. The current black MacBook sports nearly identical specifications as the high end MacBook at a $500 dollar discount – only $1099. Plus you get the black plastic body (which is now extinct) and a FireWire port for all of your video editing needs. Both the $1599 aluminum MacBook feature a 2.4GHz processor, 2GB of RAM (although the new MacBook has DDR3 RAM), a 250GB hard drive.
Granted, with the newer model you get the NVIDIA graphics chip and the aluminum body, but you also lose the FireWire port, gain a breakable glass screen and a smash-able glass trackpad. Both the new unit, and the refurbished unit will have the same warranty and guarantee. I have owned four refurbished Apple Computers and I have never been disappointed.
I have a BlackBook, and I love it. It is the sleekest and sexiest MacBook in my humble opinion. There is something about the mat blackness that is classy. Especially next to its white step-brother and the aluminum rich cousin.
So, while you still can, buy the refurbished black MacBook and not the Aluminum sex goddess MacBook.
