General Cool Stuff
by Dameon Welch-Abemathy on November 18, 2007

For all the movies that are produced year in and year out, only a select few deserve to be called classics. The ironic thing is, when blade runner was first released 25 years ago, it did not do all that well in the theaters in the US. However, it achieved a sort of cult following among technology fans.
Director Ridley Scott was not happy with the original, theatrical cut of the film. Many purists would agree with that assessment. I saw an alternate cut of Blade Runner in a movie theater as a teenager. I also have a different cut of the movie on a "Directors Cut" VHS tape.
Warner Brothers is re-releasing Blade Runner on DVD and HD-DVD just in time to be a last-minute stocking stuffer for the geek in your life. The 5 Disc "Ultimate Collectors Edition" will contain all 5 cuts of the film along with a ton of extras, though I'd be perfectly happy with the 2 Disc "Special Edition" myself.
All editions contain Ridley Scott's "Final Cut" of the film, which has been restored and remastered with added & extended scenes, added lines, new and cleaner special effects and all new 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio. Hopefully they did a tasteful job of this, unlike what occurred with the remastering of the original Star Wars trilogy.
