Belkin Surge Protector Takes A Bite out of Energy Vampires
Filed in archive Green Gadgets by Chris Matier on September 3, 2008

The Belkin Conserve Surge Protector looks like a normal, 8 outlet surge protector, but it has a twist. It works with a wireless switch that you can mount on your wall and physically kills all power to the devices when they are not in use. There are 2 outlets that are "always on" for devices like a router or TIVO that you need to be on 24-7. Any other devices such as a TV, Stereo, PS3, or Wii that you turn off can be physically removed from the grid so they stop leeching phantom power.
The Belkin Conserve Surge Protector will be $49.99 when released. I am interested to see how long it would take for the $50 to pay for itself. If you need a new power strip anyway, then this definitely looks like the way to go, but if you are simply interested in saving money or the environment, it might be worth a second look as well.
