Atomic RAM? Getting Closer!

My mom worked at an Intel manufacturing facility in the late 1970s. She brought home a chip once that, when plugged into a computer, would hold two kilobytes of RAM. 2048 little ones and zeros. This chip was about half the size of my adult pinky finger and was considered state of the art back then.
Fast forward to today. I can buy something that is smaller than my fingernail and it holds 2 gigabytes of RAM. That is 1,073,741,824 ones and zeros! Granted, that's taken less than 3 decades to achieve, and every time I think about it, it just amazes me how far we've come.
But we can go farther. The folks at Intel are looking at storing bits of data on a single atom. They're making progress, but there is still work to be done.
