AirPort Express

Before release, this little 6.7 ounce box from heaven had over 80,000 pre-orders. Why? Because it has the power to solve many of your wires-too-short and network-signal-low problems.

Misconception correction: You DON'T need a Mac to use it.

I purchased mine online for the $129, the same price its been at since release in the middle of July, 2004. You can use it as your router for your entire house, a new, much smaller better signaled router. But this isn't the gem that I personally saw in it. Mine sits halfway between the router that I use and my laptop computer. It boosts my signal from 64/67% to 95/100%.

Not only that, but all three computers in my room (windows and mac) connect to my usb printer wirelessly through the Airport express. And my favorite part, airtunes, lets me stream my music from any itunes in the house to the stereo system hooked up to the airport express. Amazing.

When I first got it, unlike many other users, it didn't quite work immediately. But after about seven minutes I got it to work. Definitly worth the seven minutes.

Another downside that I quickly found was - who puts their stereo and printer in the same place? I ended up using a longer cable that came with my printer and put it stowed away on a shelf in my closet. Other than that, this small white super router has been nothing less than a morsel of love.

The logistics are simple, it plugs into a wall, and you can plug a broadband (DSL, Cable, etc.) connection into it, a usb printer (or charge your ipod and plug in the usb cable) into it, set of speakers, or an entire living room stereo into it.

All in all, if any of the uses I mentioned above you could see yourself using sound useful, I would say the $129 is worth it.
