A Tale of Two Formats

I'm not sure which of the new HD optical
disk formats I am most looking forward too. Honestly, I'm not sure that I care. Sure, the PS3 will come out with Blu-Ray and put some weight behind that format, while at the same time Microsoft is putting it's considerable weight behind HD DVD as is Toshiba. Sony seems to feel they can force adoption of protocols by simply putting their devices on the market with support for what protocols they prefer to use. I think they may see the fallacy of that assumption now that their UMD format for PSP movies is all but dead, though it lives strong for games. I know I'm not the only person having visions of Betamax vs VHS with this Blu-Ray vs HD DVD battle being fought.
Deciding which format to get behind and ultimately purchase simply remains to be seen. HD DVD content is out now from major movie studios, which puts some considerable weight behind the format. I could be wrong, but I just don't see a movie studio producing content for both formats. The only way to settle the war between the two formats is to see what price the players and burners for the each format comes in at and to see how the devices test in real world settings. My money is on the cheaper format to buy, which currently seems to be the HD DVD, and the format that performs the best and is the best supported, both of the latter remain to be seen. Check out more on the format wars at PC Magazine.
