8 and 16 GB Flash Drives on the Way

Who doesn't love NAND flash memory? It's small, it's relatively cheap to produce, you can beat the heck out of it and some day, it'll replace hard drives in our computers. Related to the last point: Samsung just announced that they've developed 8-gigabit NAND chips that are 25 percent smaller than previous chips. Manufacturers can take 8 of these chips, put them into stacks of 4 chips a piece and create an 8 gig flash drive. Add an extra controller and you can double the capacity to 16 gigs, about 4 times what you can get out of a flash drive now. Expect to see devices with these higher capacities by the end of the year.
