7 Port USB Buddy Hub Shares Ports Between PCs
On the face of things, the 7 Port USB Buddy Hub from Ultra Products sounds like a pretty good deal, especially for the $39.99 asking price: seven additional USB ports, powered by an AC adapter, with the ability to plug in two host PCs at once and A/B those devices so you can switch your printer to another computer without having to move any plugs. Cool concept, right? The A/B buttons even look like little alien heads. There's one problem, though: it's only USB 1.1 compliant, with a maximum speed of 12 MBits/sec. Even though most USB 2.0 devices don't come anywhere close to the standard's theoretical maximum of 480 MBits/sec, what's the point of spending money on a hub that can't give you years of future support?
