General Cool Stuff
by Chris Matier on July 21, 2009

Pete, a Google engineer on the YouTube project, has begun experimenting with various three-dimensional video technologies and he is hoping that the tech catches on. If you were unaware, Google has a fantastic policy where they allow engineers and programmers to work on side projects with up to 20% of their time. This policy has given birth to Google Labs, and now 3D video. Here is what the engineer had to say:
I'm the developer working on the stereoscopic player as a 20% project. It's currently very early, hence the silly bugs like swapping the eyes for the anaglyph modes. A fix for this is in the works.
To turn on the 3D on, there is a simple YouTube tag: "yt3d:enable=true". Pete is working on this as a side project, so project growth is not a guarantee, but if it catches on, the project is sure to grow. Pete, if this makes Google money, you are going to be a very popular and important man.
Give the 3D video a try if you have the technology to decode it. It is actually pretty cool.
