20 Gigabyte Wireless?

20 Gigabyte Wireless?

They haven't even approved the 802.11n standard, and they're already talking about a wireless specification that has a theoretical maximum of 20 gigabytes? Sign me up for that!

Unfortunately, this isn't an IP networking technology, but geared at eliminating all the wires associated with high-definition television sets. 1080p at 24 bit color depth and 60 Hz refresh rate translates into a metric ton of data, thus it makes sense they're trying to develop something that can push lots of data.

The specification is not only about speed, but about controlling audio/visual devices, providing privacy for "user generated content," and of course, respecting the copy protection wishes of the content holders. I have to presume this will be HDCP compliant, though the WirelessHD site makes no mention of that.

WirelessHD is a consortium of LG Electronics, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, SiBEAM, Inc., Sony and Toshiba. Supposedly IBM is involved in making the chips. It's in the early stages, but you could be seeing this in your home in a few short years.
